The project

• One-year training program for 90 volunteer women to become Community Health Workers (CHWs) in a disadvantaged area near Manila
• Offer of basic services in health, hygiene, home and community sanitation, as well as First Aid, maternal and child care

The needs

• Overall, healthcare services in the Philippines are deteriorating. Annually, 5,000 healthcare workers leave the country, and an estimated two hundred hospitals have closed;
• According to WHO, approximately 8 women die everyday from pregnancy and childbirth related complications.

Our partner in the Philippines

• The Family Cooperation Health Services Foundation (FAMCOHSEF), founded in 1991 by healthcare professionals, works with the Muntinlupa Health Office to create a self-reliant system of primary health care providers
• FAMCOHSEF has been successful, having trained 400 CHWs since its inception in 1991

Successfully Training 90 Community Health Workers

• Having exceeded our $35,000 goal, the project to train 90 Community Health Workers is well underway. In May 2010, they started training in maternal and child care, first aid, communicable disease control, environmental health and appropriate prescription drug use.
• In January 2011, the trainees began the practical part of their training, visiting local communities starting up FAMCOHSEF Health Center projects. Following on this success, we will soon launch a new campaign to raise funds for the second of the three phases of the project: the Nutrition and Care-Giving program.
